2009 LINCOLN NAVIGATOR: MORE STANDARD FEATURES FOR A LONG-TIME FAVORITE
BY Joe Hollingsworth/autoMedia.com

The Lincoln Navigator has been a popular full-sized luxury sport-utility vehicle since its debut in 1998. The current generation was introduced as a 2007 model. For 2009, Lincoln has now made standard many features that were previously optional on the vehicle that will carry up to eight people and tow up to 9,000 pounds when properly equipped (4x2 model/standard wheelbase). Also, several new goodies have been added.

New for 2009
New or newly standard features start with the Front Sensing System. This ultrasonic system combines with the Reverse Sensing System to help make parking the large Navigator much easier. The systems give an audible warning when the vehicle comes close to certain stationary objects while parking. Another item that can reduce stress is the newly standard rearview camera. This displays an image of what's behind you on the rearview mirror when the vehicle is in reverse (and in the navigation screen when equipped with the optional Navigation System). Lincoln's SYNC™ voice-activated system for cell phone, MP3 player and more, co-developed with Microsoft, is now standard on the Navigator. Also standard this year is the Easy Fuel™ capless fuel filler system, which means drivers no longer need to remove the gas cap to add fuel. Stay with us here. There are more standard features.

Loaded with Standard Features
Included is a power liftgate, and front seats that are now cooled in addition to being heated. Second-row seats are now heated but not cooled. In addition, all Navigators come with rain-sensing windshield wipers that automatically turn on the wipers when precipitation is detected. Also standard is a 14-speaker THX II Certified Audio System with a 600-watt amplifier, 14 speakers and a six-disc CD changer (single CD when equipped with Navigation) and a 6-month complimentary subscription to SIRIUS Satellite Radio. More standards: 18-inch-diameter aluminum wheels, highintensity discharge headlamps and dual-zone electronic automatic temperature control. But, there's more.

Leather-trimmed, heated and cooled, 10-way power adjustable driver's and front passenger's seats are also standard, as are adjustable brake and accelerator pedals with memory so drivers of all heights can sit comfortably. For easy access to third-row seats, a standard one-touch lever causes the second row to fold forward out of the way. In 8-passenger versions, the second row folds in a 40/20/40 arrangement while the third row folds 60/40. The third-row seats feature a standard power-operated folding system that quickly creates more than 54 cubic feet of cargo space (standard wheelbase).

Modern Options
For those with children, the top option is the rear seat DVD entertainment system, equipped with 8-inch screen, remote control and two sets of wireless headphones for rear seat passengers. Other options include a power moonroof, power running boards that extend when a door is opened, and a new voice-activated navigation system with SIRIUS Travel Link™, which shows traffic and weather on the navigation screen. Also optional are 20-inch-diameter chrome-aluminum wheels.

The Navigator has always been trendy and the new Monochrome Appearance Package continues this tradition. It includes premium leather seats with piping, body-color lower grille, body-color lower body-side cladding with chrome lettering, and power-folding heated memory puddle lamp mirrors.

The Wayne, Michigan-built Navigator is available in the standard length and stretched "L" versions. The "L" is almost 15 inches longer than the regular Navigator. The extra room is dedicated to cargo-carrying space behind the third row seats. Both Navigator models are available in 4x2 and 4x4.

Power and Performance
Power comes from a 310-horsepower, single overhead cam, 5.4-liter, 3-valve V-8 engine. The engine makes a peak of a whopping 365 pound-feet of torque. This helps give it a maximum towing capacity of up to a huge 9,000 pounds in 4x2 standard wheelbase models and 8,700 pounds in 4x4 standard wheelbase models when properly equipped. With a fuel tank of 28 gallons for the regular-length Navigator and 33.5 gallons for the stretched L model, you won't have to stop at every gas station on a cross-country trailer-towing expedition.

The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic, which features a pair of overdrive gears to help improve fuel economy. For 2009, the engine has been modified to be able to run a mixture of up to 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. Ratings for the 2009 4x2 standard wheelbase models received government ratings of 14 miles per gallon in the city and 20 mpg on the highway—an improvement from 12 city/18 hwy from 2008, and best-in-class for 2009.

Safety Features
Standard safety features include Advance Trac® with Roll Stability Control (RSC), side-curtain airbags that cover the first, second and third rows, and front-seat side airbags for the driver and front passenger. In U.S. government crash testing, the 2009 Navigator and Navigator L received the top five-star rating in front and side impact crash tests. 2009 is the ninth consecutive year of five-star front crash test ratings for the standard Navigator model.

The price for a rear-drive Navigator starts at about $51,130 MSRP. A fully optioned Navigator L can top $66,000. For those looking for full-size luxury with top-of-the-line features, the 2009 Lincoln Navigator makes a hard-to-miss statement.
