Why did the software update not start for my Lincoln vehicle?

There are reasons why a scheduled software update* did not start, such as your vehicle was not off, not in park (P), or the doors were open.

Your vehicle may be able to receive drivable software updates, non-drivable software updates, or both. Drivable software updates occur during normal vehicle use and require minimal driver input. You are notified on your touchscreen and connected device prior to a non-drivable update. Most non-drivable updates are completed in less than 30 minutes, though some may take up to a few hours.

You can see the vehicle software update status at the top left of the touchscreen. You can also see the notifications on your connected device.

Non-drivable Software Update Preconditions

Ensure that:

  • The vehicle is stopped and parked, the parking brake is set, and the ignition is completely off.
  • Automatic updates are turned on.
  • The update is scheduled for before or after 12 a.m. (not exactly 12 a.m.).

Note: The schedule you set is recurring. If Automatic Updates are on, every time a scheduled update is available, it installs on this schedule unless you change it. You are notified on your touchscreen and connected device before a scheduled update, with the option to reschedule.

  • The doors, hood, and trunk are closed.
  • The headlights are off.

Non-drivable Software Update Requirements

Once you begin a non-drivable software update, you cannot cancel the update.

Non-drivable software updates do not install if any of the following occur:

  • Your vehicle is running.
  • Your vehicle is switched on.
  • Your vehicle is not parked.
  • The 12 V battery is too low on charge.
  • The hazard indicators are switched on.
  • The alarm is sounding.
  • The doors are open.
  • The parking lamps are switched on.
  • You are pressing the brake pedal.
  • An emergency call is in process.
  • Your vehicle is in limp home mode.

Note: Non-drivable software updates may take longer or fail to download if your vehicle is not connected to Wi-Fi®. See Connecting the Vehicle to a Wi-Fi Network.

If you still receive error messages after the failed update, contact the Lincoln Client Relationship Center at 1-800-521-4140 or select Live Chat at the bottom right of lincoln.com/support.
